Korea, called Chosŏn (Korean: 조선; Hanja: 朝鮮) in North Korea and Hanguk (Korean: 한국; Hanja: 韓國) or Daehanminkuk (Korean: 대한민국; Hanja: 大韓民國) in South Korea, is an East Asian territory that is divided into two distinct sovereign states: North Korea, formally the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and South Korea, formally the Republic of Korea (ROK). Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed. Goryeo eventually fell to an uprising led by General Yi Seong-gye, who established Joseon in 1388.

listen), officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK; Chosŏn'gŭl: 조선민주주의인민공화국; hancha: 朝鮮民主主義人民共和國; MR: Chosŏn Minjujuŭi Inmin Konghwaguk), is a country in East Asia, in the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name Korea is derived from the Kingdom of Goguryeo, also spelled as Koryŏ. The capital and largest city is Pyongyang. North Korea shares a land border with China to the north and northwest, along the Amnok (Yalu) and Tumen rivers, and a small section of the Tumen River also forms a border with Russia to the northeast. The Korean Demilitarized Zone marks the boundary between North Korea and South Korea.
Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan in 1910. After the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II in 1945, Korea was divided into two zones by the United States and the Soviet Union, with the north occupied by the Soviets and the south by the Americans. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948 two separate governments were formed: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea in the north, and the Republic of Korea in the south. An invasion initiated by North Korea led to the Korean War (1950–53). Although the Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire, no official peace treaty was ever signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.

And one of the country's biggest IT exhibitions is back in Seoul.
Our Kim Jung-sil gives us a glimpse of most up-to-date K-technology.
This year's World IT Show presented some of the most talked about, state-of-the-art technologies ,
like this Urban Air Mobility or UAM--that could be used as a flying taxi in the future.
The aircraft is being developed by South Korean telecommunications service provider SK Telecom and America's Joby Aviation as part of an exclusive partnership.

Many lined up to experience this transportation of the future.
"I thought this can help shorten transport times and solve traffic congestion issues. I also thought it would be useful in the future if the technology can be adapted to real life."
In a booth nearby, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 mobile phone , proudly showcased its eco-friendly technology of using discarded fishing nets to make some of the inner parts of the phone.
Hyundai Motor’s latest update to its electric vehicle, KONA, on the other hand, focused on making its automobile more like a home.
The car can apparently provide electricity to home appliances such as this fridge, monitor, and laptop computer for up to four days.
But this year’s World IT Show wasn’t just about big conglomerates.
It also gave a platform to start-ups as well.
A four-year-old start-up, WATA for example, has already won three CES Innovation Awards with its technology to visualize and track warehouse storage.
"There are hundreds of thousands of shelves in a warehouse. So it takes a long time to find where anything is. But with our digital twin technology, it’s easier and faster for workers to find where things are."
All the companies we spoke to said they hope their technologies can change the lives of people not just in South Korea but in the world.

South Korea is planning to make the Seoul metropolitan area home to what would be the world's biggest hub for making system chips.
On top of that, President Yoon announces his push for further developing key high-tech sectors, of building new industrial complexes nationwide.
South Korea will establish 15 new high-tech industrial complexes nationwide including what's expected to be the world's largest system semiconductor cluster in the Seoul metropolitan area.
In an emergency economic policy meeting held on Wednesday, the South Korean government unveiled its plan to funnel 550 trillion won, equivalent to around 422 billion U.S. dollars, of private money into major high-tech sectors by 2026.
Chairing the meeting, President Yoon Suk Yeol expressed his determination to further develop cutting-edge industries.
The government plans to induce a total of 422 billion dollars of private investment in 6 major high-tech sectors, including some one-point-three billion dollars in robots and more than 70 billion dollars in future cars.
The central part of the initiative is to support private companies to invest some 340 trillion won or about 260 billion dollars to construct the world's biggest system chip-making base.
This will be in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do Province, which is close to the capital, already housing more than 150 firms in the chip materials, parts and equipment industries.
On top of this, 14 new cutting-edge industrial bases totaling 3,300 square meters will be built outside the capital region, including Daejeon, Daegu, Gwangju and Gangwon-do Province for balanced regional development.
Saying that what's important is speed, President Yoon urged the National Assembly to pass the bill to expand tax benefits for investment in high-tech industries as soon as possible.

Today, April 21st is "Science Day" here in Korea.
And one of the country's biggest IT exhibitions is back in Seoul.
Our Kim Jung-sil gives us a glimpse of most up-to-date K-technology.
This year's World IT Show presented some of the most talked about, state-of-the-art technologies ,
like this Urban Air Mobility or UAM--that could be used as a flying taxi in the future.
The aircraft is being developed by South Korean telecommunications service provider SK Telecom and America's Joby Aviation as part of an exclusive partnership.
SK Telecom will be in charge of connecting the aircraft's network.
"Behind me are visitors trying out the demo ride experience. This UAM aircraft hopes to fly across the Seoul sky by 2025."
Many lined up to experience this transportation of the future.
"I thought this can help shorten transport times and solve traffic congestion issues. I also thought it would be useful in the future if the technology can be adapted to real life."
In a booth nearby, Samsung’s Galaxy S23 mobile phone , proudly showcased its eco-friendly technology of using discarded fishing nets to make some of the inner parts of the phone.
Hyundai Motor’s latest update to its electric vehicle, KONA, on the other hand, focused on making its automobile more like a home.
The car can apparently provide electricity to home appliances such as this fridge, monitor, and laptop computer for up to four days.
But this year’s World IT Show wasn’t just about big conglomerates.
It also gave a platform to start-ups as well.
A four-year-old start-up, WATA for example, has already won three CES Innovation Awards with its technology to visualize and track warehouse storage.
"There are hundreds of thousands of shelves in a warehouse. So it takes a long time to find where anything is. But with our digital twin technology, it’s easier and faster for workers to find where things are."
All the companies we spoke to said they hope their technologies can change the lives of people not just in South Korea but in the world.

Samsung is by far the biggest company in South Korea. It makes more than twice as much as the next largest South Korean corporation. In order to house their more than 250,000 employees, the electronics giant has built its own city just outside Seoul. Today we’re learning about the city that Samsung built.
The Samsung Group, which includes Samsung Electronics and Samsung Life Insurance among others, has an annual revenue of 208 billion dollars, accounting for 17% of South Korea’s total GDP. Though it has been plagued by controversy in recent years, it is by far one of the largest corporations on Earth.
Samsung produces everything from medical supplies to energy and they have substantial holdings in finance, resort management, and insurance. In the first quarter of 2019, Samsung shipped 71.9 million smartphone units, compared to Huawei and Apple, which shipped 59.1 million and 36.4 million, respectively, according to IDC. Needless to say, this company is extremely powerful.

Located on the Korean Peninsula, Korea is bordered by China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast. It is separated from Japan to the east by the Korea Strait and the Sea of Japan .
Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century. The invasions by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, however, greatly weakened the nation, which forced it into vassalage. After the Yuan dynasty's collapse, severe political strife followed.
